POLITICS: Power and principles come under the spotlight

“It is extremely risky; all of my credibility is on the line." This was President Rafael Correa's disarmingly frank evaluation of a referendum he wants in order to carry out a series of constitutional reforms. It came after some of the founding members of his political project accused him of betraying its core principles and making a naked power grab through his proposed reform of the judicial system. They promised to carry out a “No" campaign if the constitutional court gives the go-ahead to the referendum. Correa, who thrives on polarisation, bundled these dissidents in with the traditional opposition parties - or partidocracia as he derisively refers to them.
